How to end up in Graduate School
Halfway through working towards my undergraduate degree I changed my major from journalism to English. I wanted a new challenge so I switched into the world of literature, which I loved, but had little experience in.
As graduation approached, I struggled with my next move. I had worked for the Daily Mississippian all of undergraduate and had fallen in love with lifestyles. I had also gotten engaged in February and my now husband had one more year left of his Master’s degree. I had talked to a couple of my old journalism professors, and I decided to apply for Integrated Marketing Communications. I had no idea what the program consisted of, what we would be studying, or how it would benefit me; but, it seemed like the right step. I began the program, got married in September, and fell in love with learning about media while applying skills I already had.
My family lives in Orlando, FL and Memphis, TN, so I claim both cities as home. Now, we claim Oxford as our home! We adopted a dog, a welsh corgi named Maybie, over Christmas break and love having her! My husband teaches math at Lafayette High School. All of my undergraduate career I volunteered with a ministry called Young Life at Lafayette High School, even going on student staff my senior year. We have continued to volunteer with Young Life at LHS several nights a week, as well as working with college students training to be leaders. We both have become part of the community and love hanging out with students and teachers.
Besides classes and volunteering with Young Life I work on campus at the Student Media Center for Professor Thompson, I tutor in the Writing Center, as well as a split assistantship with a journalism 101 class and managing a website. This class interests me because I want to know more about digital media. My dream job would be to work in media or marketing for companies that market to women (beauty, fashion, food, travel). Since high school, I have fallen in love with magazines and the things they discuss, but now magazines have spread to blogs and a more digital medium, which I find fascinating. I would love to learn more about this world and begin to enter into it. I have basic experience with mobile and online marketing, solely from being marketed to and making my own website and blog. So I have experience through self branding, in a sense. In the next 5 years I would love to work for a company that works to encourage and empower women and reach them in positive ways. And I see myself outside of Oxford in a major city or out of the country, my ten year plan doesn’t really differ yet from my 5 year ideas.
As far as things people may not know about me, I studied social justice within my minor of southern studies and have become a feminist and racial reconciliation advocate. I am an obsessive reader of fiction, feminist nonfiction and fiction, as well as crime novels. I also spend a lot of my free time outdoors, running, camping, hiking and hanging out with Maybie.
